A full-service shipyard supporting both private and military vessels required exceptionally rugged tools that could withstand harsh marine conditions. Their crews work in extreme temperatures, damp environments, and tight, poorly lit spaces where reliable, high-output task lighting is critical for safety and productivity.
The Challenge
The shipyard had been using a handheld work light previously developed by Alert Reel Manufacturing, but new job applications required significantly increased brightness while maintaining the same level of durability.
The upgraded design needed to:
- Deliver substantially more light output.
- Withstand impacts, vibration, and movement.
- Perform reliably in wet, cold, and corrosive environments.
- Retain the features the client’s teams already depended on.
Off-the-shelf handheld lights could not meet the durability standards or the extreme environmental conditions of shipyard operations.

The Solution
Alert re-engineered the existing handheld task light into a new COB LED model designed for maximum brightness and durability. Key improvements included:
- L750-lumen COB LED output — more than double the original brightness.
- IK07 impact rating for rugged performance in demanding environments.
- Durable corded design preferred by shipyard crews for all-day reliability.
- Updated internal components to withstand temperature swings and moisture.
The redesigned model retained everything the crews loved—grip, ergonomics, reliability—while significantly improving overall illumination.
